A Fountain Hills’ second quarter blitzkrieg, in which the Falcons outscored the Lady Longhorns 21-8, eventually proved to be the difference in Payson’s 50-40 loss Jan. 29 in Wilson Dome.
The Lady Horns took a 10-9 lead after the first eight minutes and outscored the Falcons 22-20 in the second half, but Fountain Hills’ second quarter outburst put Payson in a hole it could never dig itself out of.
While the game will go down in Payson’s “L” column, it did showcase the talents of a freshman standout who has shown the potential to eventually become one of Payson’s finest.
Arissa Paulson was named “Player of the Game” after racking up a team-high 19 points while corralling seven rebounds, dishing out three assists, blocking two shots and recording one steal.
From the free throw line, the frosh star was a very creditable 7-for-9.
In addition to the Horn cause receiving a nice push from Paulson, it also received scoring help from junior Lani O’Donnell who finished with 10 points. From three-point land, O’Donnell was 2-for-3.
Savannah Grassel chipped in with six points, a team-high nine rebounds and two assists.
For the game, the Lady Horns were without the services of team scoring and rebounding leader Chioya Hill who was sidelined as a precaution with a minor injury. She is expected to return soon.
