According to the groundhog in Pennsylvania, we will have an early spring. From what I have observed over the past few weeks, that may be so.
My husband spotted the first hummer last week at a feeder in Payson — in February!
The apple trees in the Village are showing signs of buds forming. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the frost stays away long enough for the apple blossoms to mature enough for an apple crop this year.
There has been a significant amount of rain since Jan. 1. According to a resident of Bear Flat, there has been 5.41 inches of precipitation. That measures out to two inches over the previous year.
Let’s hope that this trend continues into the fire season.
Hellsgate Fire Department
The next fire board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Star Valley station #21 in the meeting room.
There has been a shift of firefighter personnel, which affects fire station #22 in Tonto Village. There will be a firefighter on duty on a hit and miss basis.
If anyone needs a burn permit, contact Karen at the administrative office in Star Valley. The number for the fire station is (928) 474-3835 Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you call and request a burn permit, Karen can make it out and have it ready for you as you come into town. If it is after hours, the outside door will be open and the permit will be on the counter.
The Hellsgate firefighting family wishes to express their appreciation to Bobby Mollere of station #23 in Mead Ranch for his service in the upkeep of the firefighting equipment. Bobby has been a godsend in repairing and replacing and maintaining all the fire equipment for stations #21, #22 and #23. Thank you Bobby for helping to keep the fire equipment in great shape.
Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary
The auxiliary will not be holding any official meetings until April — Monday, April 8 — but the members are still selling the “Fireflies Can Cook” cookbook for $10 and the Hellsgate T-shirts and caps for various prices and in various colors: gray, blue and black. The contact persons are Janet Snyder at (928) 478-9935 or Linda Stailey at (928) 478-4641. The following is a sample of one of the recipes from the “Fireflies Can Cook” cookbook:
I Don’t Know Cake

One box of pudding cake mix, one small can of mandarin oranges, juice and all.
Mix and bake according to box instructions.
Frosting: one small can crushed pineapple, juice and all, one container of Cool Whip and one box of vanilla pudding. Mix all together and spread on cake.
This recipe is as simple as they get, but it is so delicious. Give it a try, and buy the cookbook for more great recipes.
Chess Merit Badge Counselor International Chess Master Daniel Rensch recently helped the Shelby School host to the first of four events designed to help Cub and Boy Scouts of all ages earn their Chess Merit Badges and Belt Loops.
ChessKid.com and The Boy Scouts of America are sponsors of the events.
Rensch teaches chess at these events to help Scouts learn enough about the game to fulfill all the requirements to earn their badges and loops.
Rensch was invited to Los Angeles to direct chess scenes in an independent film starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Besides having a cameo role in the film, he was asked to come back and edit the chess scenes for final production.
Look forward to more on this story, when “Life of a King” premiers later in 2013.
Wally Oznicheck of Mead Ranch had his birthday on Feb. 4. He tells me that this is his 44th anniversary of his 39th birthday. What a great way to remember his big day!
Kara Shaw of Tonto Village III and a Hellsgate Firefly, who works full-time at National Bank, will add another candle to her birthday cake on Feb. 11. Tim Ehrhardt of Mead Ranch and Thorry Smith, a Hellsgate firefighter will share the day with Kara.

On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, Clint Daniels of Tonto Village III will celebrate his big day.
Happy birthday to each of you.
Get well wishes to Lonie Smith of Ellison Creek Summer Homes. Lonie has been a great help to the Hellsgate Fireflies and to the fire department. Lonie has been the main person to go to for the firewise program in her area. Best wishes as you fight this illness. Our prayers are with you.
Condolences to Bobbie Doss and her brother Ben of Hellsgate Fire Department for the loss of their grandmother, Cynthia Briggs. Mrs. Briggs was 99 years young when she passed. Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 2 in Phoenix.
Don’t forget your dearest people on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Let them know that you care about them by just telling them how much they mean to you. That does not cost any money.
