It will take the aerobic capacity of a marathon runner, the strength of a power lifter and the tenacity of a junk yard dog to win an Arizona State Division III “state” weight class championship.

As demanding as that seems, the Longhorns’ eight state qualifiers are well prepared to make a run at honors when the tournament kicks off at 11 a.m. this morning, Feb. 8, Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

Dallin Macnab (120), William McCrary (126), Kyle Brown (170) and Anselmo Vasquez (220) will represent PHS as Section III gold medalists.

Conner Anderson (160) advances to state as a S-III runner-up, as does Tate Sweeney (145). Chase Elmer (138) earned a berth to state as the section’s third place wrestler and Tyler Anderson nailed down a state seed by finishing fourth in the section tournament held last week at Higley High School.

In the opening round at state, Macnab (36-5) is seeded against Zach Sobarzo (42-6) of Desert Edge.

McCrary (34-8) has drawn Adonai Roberto (17-10) in the opening round and Brown (32-9) will be pitted today against Tempe’s Ibsa Ferardo (8-14).

Vasquez (26-7) will have to get past Sahuarita’s Joe Jenkins (32-17) to advance in the tournament.

Conner Anderson (38-7) faces Spencer Coffin (35-18) of Chino Valley and Sweeney (21-21) takes on Empire sophomore Clinton Butler (25-10).

Elmer (34-7) has drawn Show Low’s John Clark (32-16) for today’s match and Trevor Anderson (12-9) will go toe to toe against Parker Hawk (30-12) of Campo Verde.

First round winners advance to session II of the tournament set to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The medal rounds begin at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
