Seniors Survive On Basketball Court Without Oxygen

With the inaugural Wiseman 3-on-3, 50-year plus basketball tournament in the record books, Tonto Apache Gym Recreation Leader Eric Pendleton is already planning for the second annual event.

He contends the first ever tournament was a success, but there is one change he’ll make, “Have an oxygen tank on hand.”

During the course of the tournament, Pendleton added, “One player asked if there was oxygen. I thought he was kidding, but perhaps not.”

In the tournament finale played Feb. 23 in the TAT gymnasium, the “Red” team of John Davis, Tom Jones and John Wakelin outlasted the “Yellow” team 25-22 and 31-23 to claim the senior title.

Red won, Pendleton said, “With more all around shooting” but the Yellow crew, “Had family members yelling, rooting their team on.”

Pendleton’s plans for the 2014 tournament, in addition to having oxygen on hand, is to attract more teams, “I suspect a bigger tournament.”
