Check the weather and grab a fishing pole — Green Valley Park lakes will get some monster trout this weekend.
“This is a great way to start off the new year and helps highlight that an urban fishing license is one of the best buys out there — it’s a ticket to fun all year long,” said Eric Swanson, who heads up the urban fishing program, which includes Payson’s Green Valley Park lakes.
The stocking of rainbow trout weighing up to six pounds will take place this weekend. These “super-sized” trout can be up to five inches larger than normally stocked trout.
“It’s a user pay, user play concept that can net you a lot of fun throughout the year,” Swanson said.
A 2013 Urban Fishing License gives anglers license to catch these whoppers close to home.
The special license for urban lakes pays for the stocking program.
Game and Fish officials say they will increase stocking levels by 20 percent.
Payson is part of Arizona’s Urban Fishing Program, which consists of 16 Valley lakes and four in the Tucson area stocked by Game and Fish from early November through the middle of March.
“These urban lakes also have sunfish and bass to catch. Plus, these lakes are all in city parks that also offer other recreational opportunities for the whole family,” Swanson said.
