A pair of great blue herons has found a sanctuary in Bear Flat. One of the residents has taken pictures of them wading in the creek behind their cabin. What a sight! Have they found a new home or are they just visiting?
Is it cold enough for you? If not, wait a few days; the weather people say that it will be getting colder. Winter is just starting folks, so we will have to get used to the snow and ice for a few more months.
My husband is getting the planting fever already, he wants to plant some apple trees on our property in Punkin Center and found out from the Yuma Sun newspaper that there is a variety of apple developed by the Israelis called the Anna apple and the Dorsett apple.
The claim is that there does not need to be a long cold period to develop the buds. We called Plant Fair Nursery and they have the bare root Anna apple in stock. We will be planting this spring and we will give you an update periodically.
The Divas are still getting together at 1 p.m. every Wednesday at the Tonto Village Fire Station. Even though there are many members that divide their time between here and the Valley, there is still a substantial group left to play dominoes and enjoy a bite to eat and, of course, to make time to catch up on the latest happenings.
This group of ladies has changed over the years, some of the gals have moved away, but the word has spread and there are new ladies every year. The group has been meeting since 2002 and is still going strong.
Come and see for yourself, parking is on the back lot of the fire station.
The precipitation in Bear Flat is below the normal for the year. According to one of the permanent residents of the area, (who keeps meticulous records year after year) the moisture count is down for the year. The readings show that there is a deficit of 1.66 inches less than last year. Bear Flat did receive a substantial amount of snow for December (more than one inch of moisture) or the total would be 2.66 inches less than last year.
Oops! I missed a birthday again this week. On Jan. 10, Tonto Village I resident Steven Kamp added another candle to his birthday cake. Happy belated birthday!
On Jan. 13, Hellsgate firefighter Rick Heron is another year older.
On Jan. 14, Claudia Ezell of Christopher Creek celebrates another year.
The importance of birthdays is not how many you’ve had but rather how well you’ve celebrated.

Foggy windshields? Here’s a good hint ... buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser. The eraser works better than a cloth.
