Brrr! Talk about being cold! Tonto Village has experienced frozen pipes, drafty windows and plenty of icy streets. Last week I reported that I had fallen on the ice and put a knot on my head and later found out that I broke my tailbone. Ouch!!! I have been told that this will take quite a while to heal. So, I am not walking very well and I am not venturing outside unless it is absolutely necessary. I am not sure how many people have fallen from slipping on the ice, but I have talked with a few folks in town and they have also been told of people who have fallen. Be careful out there, folks!
The Control Road is very icy in the spots that are shaded by the pine trees, and there have been a few vehicles that have slid off the road. I am hoping that I see a truck loaded with cinders from our county maintenance crew any day now. Hint, hint, hint!
Hellsgate Fire Department
Congratulations to Hellsgate firefighter Matthew McKinley for acing his EMT test on Monday. The Fireflies are pretty darn proud of your accomplishment, Matt. Keep up the good work.
The Shelby School Troop 397 has begun selling delectable Girl Scout cookies! Yes, your favorites including Samoas, Savannah Smiles and Thin Mints. The proceeds will fund uniforms and badges. The girls hope that the money raised will also send all 20 of them this summer to Rim Shadows Girl Scout Camp in Washington Park. So expect knocks on your door from Daisies, Brownies and Juniors (from Grades K-6).
There will also be local stands. Their hours of operation and locations will be announced soon. For more information, you can call Talley Tanenhaus at (928) 951-1371.
New Hellsgate Fire board member Gary Norem and his wife Joan will observe their 23rd wedding anniversary on Jan. 20. Happy anniversary to you! According to traditional gifts for the 23rd anniversary the gift is anything silverplate. Interesting.
Hellsgate firefighter Bill Beller will be another year older on Jan. 24. Happy birthday, Bill.
Double D happenings
Put Sunday, Feb. 3 on your calendar for the big Super Bowl party that will be held at the Double D Saloon. The event will be a potluck affair so bring along those munchies and root for your favorite team.
Ethel has not set a time yet. I will add that to my next column and I am sure that the party will be posted on the bulletin board that is on the porch.
Since news is in short supply, I have found a few interesting “Only in America” tidbits on the Internet:
Only in America — Do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a Diet Coke?
Only in America — Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
Helpful hint — Rainy day cure for dog odor: next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
