With 140 square miles now under his supervision, Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erik Axlund has a few new roads to learn.
Axlund is the area’s new sergeant, permanently taking over after Sgt. Terri Lincoln left more than a year ago. There were several interim sergeants, but Axlund is the first now permanently based out of Payson.
Axlund worked in Page for the last 10 years with DPS. Before that, he worked for the Coconino County Sherriff’s Office, running boat patrol on Lake Powell and at the jail in Flagstaff.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northern Arizona University.
Axlund oversees five other officers tasked with monitoring the highways throughout northern and central Gila County.
Axlund said he is happy to move up to the pines after working in the desert some 15 years. He is still looking for a permanent home in Payson for his family, which includes his wife and four children, ages 2, 4, 6 and 8.
