James W. Schouten, M.D., a local family medicine physician and medical director of Hospice Compassus – Payson, recently earned a sub-specialty certification in Hospice and Palliative Care from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).

“I am committed to providing the best possible hospice and palliative care for my patients,” said Dr. Schouten. “This certification is part of my ongoing effort to ensure that the care I administer meets the highest possible standards.”

Schouten, a graduate of the University of Utah School of Medicine, specializes in family medicine and hospice care. He completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and a faculty development fellowship through the University of Arizona. Since 1998, Schouten, who is board certified in family medicine, has worked with Banner Health in Payson. He joined Hospice Compassus as associate medical director in 2010 and was promoted to medical director in 2011.

Schouten’s hospice and palliative care certification is representative of Hospice Compassus’ successful initiative to encourage all of its physicians to become sub-specialty board certified by the AAHPM.

“Hospice Compassus is the leading provider of hospice care here in Payson and across the U.S.,” said Schouten. “I am proud to work for an organization that shares my same compassion for patients and the highest standards for quality.”

The AAHPM governs the practice of hospice and palliative medicine, including clinical advancements and research updates. The organization helps physicians and other healthcare providers to integrate palliative care into all health care and ensures that pain and symptom control, psychosocial distress, spiritual issues, and practical needs are addressed with patients and their families throughout the continuum of care.
