Rim Country Classic Auto Club makes donations

The Rim Country Classic Auto Club will present $25,000 to area charities from proceeds from the 2013 RCCAC Beeline Cruise-In and Car Show.

The presentation is at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 10 in the parking lot at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road. 

Summer food program ending

The Payson Schools’ Summer Food Service Program’s last day will be Friday, July 12. There are wrestling and football camps starting that do not allow the program to be continued into the summer.

Meals were served to more than 4,000 children through June 30, and this year many adults also benefitted.

PEC enrollment

Payson Education Center, an alternative accredited high school, is now enrolling students. School starts Monday, Aug. 5.

Please call PEC at (928) 468-8509 for enrollment information. The school is located at the south end of town at 112 W. Cedar Lane, Payson.

Pine school supply drive needs your donations

It is time for the Riff Raff Club’s School Assistance Program.

Sheila Deasey, secretary of the Riff Raff Club, will be at the Ponderosa Market in Pine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in July to collect supplies or cash donations.

Here is a list of items that the school needs: #2 pencils, washable markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, spiral notebooks, wide or college ruled paper, 3-ring binders that expand to a maximum of 2-inches; Lysol/Clorox wipes and backpacks.

Needed nurse room supplies: Band Aids®, paper towels for ice packs, plastic snack-size bags for ice packs; socks — any size; underwear sizes 4T-7; hand sanitizer; Lysol/Clorox wipes.

Financial donations may also be mailed to the Riff Raff Club, P.O. Box 1941, Pine, AZ 85544 or by contacting clubriffraff@hotmail .com.

PB&J Drive

Summer is here and kids are out of school. Many of our neighbors in the Payson area are struggling to feed their families. Again, St. Vincent de Paul is teaming up with Channel 12 News and Bashas’ for the annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive. Stop by the checkout counters to donate, purchase a pre-filled bag or purchase some peanut butter and jelly while shopping.

To make arrangements for registration for elementary students, call for appointments: Payson Elementary School (K-2), (928) 474-5882; Julia Randall Elementary School (3-5), (928) 474-2353. Students moving from PES to JRE do not need to re-register; Rim Country Middle School, call for details, (928) 474-4511.

Payson High School registration schedule is as follows:

Juniors and Seniors - 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 10.

Freshmen and Sophomores - 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, July 11.

New Students - 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, July 12 (get registration packets ahead of time at the Payson High School Guidance Center. Students with IEP’s report first to the Special Services Office located at the District Office, 902 W. Main St. daily from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.).

Make-up registration -7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 16.

Payson High School students and families are requested to attend registration at the appropriate dates and times listed.

Open forum on Mesa del water

There will be an open forum at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 9 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino on a variety of issues regarding water in Mesa del Caballo organized by Steve Gehring.

Among the issues: a well on lot No. 164 was removed from the water system, the status of negotiations to bring it back into the system, why it was never reported to state authorities as a source for production of water and what that may have cost residents; why the fire department has no water source in the community; 100 percent of Brooke Utilities stock in the Payson Water Company has been sold to JW Water Holdings LLC.

This is not a lecture; it is an open forum for all residents of the community.

Senior Circle

The Payson Regional Medical Center Senior Circle will host a program on menopause and post menopause at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 10 with Dr. Ed Waechter. Come meet the newest addition to PRMC’s medical family, Dr. Ed Waechter.

Community Breakfast

Shepherd of The Pines Lutheran Church is hosting a community breakfast from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., Friday, July 12 at 507 W. Wade Lane. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee and juice.

Rim Country residents and visitors are invited to join us for food and fellowship. A free will offering will be accepted.

The church will host a breakfast on the second Friday of every month from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. For more information call (928) 474-5440.

Gisela, Deer Creek meeting

Gila County District Two Supervisor Michael Pastor has scheduled a community meeting for Gisela/Deer Creek area residents. The meeting will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, July 13 at the Gisela Community Center.

All residents are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring all their questions and concerns to the meeting.    

Sale at The Nook

The Nook New and Resale shop is having a sale through July 13. 

All housewares, furniture and books will be 50 percent off. Select new merchandise will be 25 percent off.

The Nook is at 408 W. Main St., Payson and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. All proceeds benefit New Beginnings Pregnancy & Parenting Center.

Driver Safety Class

An AARP Driver Safety Class will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 13, at Payson Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway.

This class is designed for age 50+ drivers, but is open to all drivers over 18. Call (928) 472-9290 to register.

AARP member registration is $12. Non-AARP registration is $14. There are no tests. You simply sign up and learn. Plus, you could get a great discount on your car insurance.

Mazatzal Arts & Crafts Fair

The Mazatzal Arts & Crafts Fair is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday July 13 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday July 14.

Shoppers can find purses, shadow boxes, jewelry of all kinds, mosaics, crocheting, bird feeders, bird houses, patio lamps, beautiful paper-covered boxes with memory albums inside or tea cups, cactus jellies, and more.

Admission is free — start your Christmas shopping early.

Bible school in Pine

The Church on Randall Place, 6338 Randall Place, Pine, will have Vacation Bible School 2013: Colossal Coaster World from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19. Registration begins at 9 a.m., Monday, July 15.

The program is for those six years old through the sixth-grade.

On Thursday, July 18 the Bible school will have a Family Lunch with games, food, music and more.

Become a Girl Scout leader

Girl Scouts in the Payson area is alive and well, but additional adult leaders are always needed.

If you have any questions about Girl Scouts or being a leader, you are invited to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Hall, 1000 N. Easy St., Payson at 6:30 p.m., Monday, July 15 for an informational session and light refreshments.

All the training to be a leader is done here in Payson; leaders don’t have to go anywhere else to be trained and support is always available to make sure you are successful.

If you have a daughter who might be interested in becoming a Girl Scout, ages 5-17, please bring her along too. If you can’t make the informational meeting, please call Diane at (928) 595-0128 with any questions.

Help Payson Community Kids and win a four-night cruise

Payson Community Kids (PCK) is a non-profit organization that assists low-income, “at risk” families and their children. This year, PCK is sponsoring a raffle for a four- night cruise for two with Princess Cruise Line to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico, leaving from the Long Beach area.

There will only be 100 tickets sold at a cost of $100 each. The drawing will be held live on KMOG at noon, Wednesday, July 31.
