Payson has a reputation for having an amazing community of volunteers who give of their time for causes and projects about which they feel passionate. Nowhere is that generous spirit more evident than the Humane Society of Central Arizona. If you’ve been on the west end of Main Street in the morning, you have no doubt seen our volunteers out and about walking dogs. Shopped at the Humane Society Thrift Store? Only one full time and one part time staff member keep that place in top shape, but they have a cadre of volunteers helping them do it. Seen a Humane Society booth at the Farmer’s Market or at a local arts and crafts show? That’s run by volunteers too!
What you may not see are the behind the scenes volunteers who are getting dirty alongside staff cleaning kennels, doing the laundry, and sweating in the hot sun behind the animal shelter in the play yards with the dogs. Volunteers come in and help clean up after the numerous kittens, spend time socializing the cats, hold down the fort at the front desk, and spend countless hours picking up cans from the recycling bins all around Rim Country. We even have volunteers who help us maintain the cat spaces at PetSmart!
These people all have something in common — they care deeply about the animals being served. Their hard work and support make it possible for us to manage with a small staff and put our resources toward giving our four-legged friends the best care we can while they wait for their forever home. The Humane Society simply could not function without our volunteer community.
But there is always more to do ... and we have a variety of volunteer positions currently open at the shelter and the thrift store, in the recycling program, and on teams that help organize our fundraising events. We take volunteers seriously and spend time giving you a full tour of the facilities and conducting an orientation interview to discuss your talents, interests, and abilities. All the available positions are described in detail, and we work with you to find your best fit. Positions that involve interaction with animals require some additional training to ensure safety for both humans and animals, and to help you get comfortable in your volunteer role.
If you are interested in volunteering with the Humane Society, please come in and fill out an interest form, or download one from our Web site: www.humanesocietycentral az.org. We also have openings on our board of directors. We need members that have experience in: finance, education, planning, law, engineering, personnel (HR), and business. For board positions, please call the shelter and speak to our Executive Director, Sarah Hock, for more information on the requirements and commitment.
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and we think it also takes a community to care for all the furry critters too. We at the Humane Society of Central Arizona encourage you to consider how gratifying it can be to volunteer your time for a cause shared by so many. Call us today at (928) 474-5590 for more information.
