The goal was to enjoy a round of golf, but their mission was to lend a helping hand to school children in need.
They were the more than 100 golfers, many of them BPOE club members, who showed up July 6 at Payson Golf Course to participate in the annual Elks Social Welfare Community charity golf tournament that raises money to help purchase school clothing for needy children.
This year, the Payson Elks-hosted tournament earned $4,200, which will be used in its entirety to help clothe needy children this school year.
“We had lodges from Kearney, Show Low, Flagstaff, Chandler, Mesa Buckhorn, Tempe, Gila Bend, Phoenix, Phoenix West, and of course Payson, raise funds for their Clothe-a-Child program,” said tournament chairman Becky Waer.
While Payson golfers call PGC their home course, it was a foursome from Kearny who walked away with championship honors.
Former Payson High school football, basketball and baseball standout Waylon Pettet won the longest drive contest.
