Karen Peterson and Judy Mackenzie joined forces to win the Payson Women’s Golf Association annual Memorial Tournament.

Played May 28 at Payson Golf Course, the event is one of PWGA’s major tournaments of the season. In winning, the championship duo carded a low net 55.

Isabella Sockrider and Earlene Brewer took second, just one stroke behind the tournament champions.

In the battle for bronze-medal honors Jan Burns and Jeanne Griffin tied Susan Torrens and Mary Jones. Both teams finished with identical scores of 61.

“A really close tournament,” said Mackenzie, the PWGA secretary. “In order to win by one stroke, Karen had to play to par, (five under her handicap) and I shot 79 (seven under her handicap).

In the battle for closest-to-the-pin prize money, Peterson won on No. 8 at 13 feet and Brewer was closest on No. 14 with a lie of 3 feet, 7 inches.

On April 30, PWGA members locked horns in a low gross/low net tournament at PGC.

“Despite swirling wind coming up to torment the players, they rose to the challenge and produced a tight competition,” said Mackenzie.

In Flight 1 low gross play, Mackenzie took first with an 84. In low net play, Shari Cody, Lois Judd and Peterson tied for top honors with identical scores of 79.

Burns took Flight 2 low gross laurels at 92. Joyce Goff claimed the low net title with a 69.

In Flight 3 low gross competition, Brewer was top gun at 108. In low net play, Calderwood finished on top at 75.

Mackenzie was the closest-to-the-pin champ on No. 8 at 11. 5 feet.

With a lie of 10.5 feet, Peterson won on No. 14.

The PWGA meets every Tuesday morning at Payson Golf Course and new members are always welcome.
