Brent Ruttle Jr., the son of Brent Sr. and Julia Ruttle, was promoted to captain in the United States Air Force on May 28, 2013.
He graduated from Payson High School in 2004 and Arizona State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering and received his Air Force commission from the university’s AFROTC Detachment 025.
Ruttle’s first — and current — assignment is at Wright Patterson’s Aerospace Systems Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory. He is assigned to the High Speed Systems Division’s Propulsion Technology Branch as a hypersonic research engineer, doing work with the branch’s Cold Start research.
Outside of work, Ruttle can often be found mountain biking, skydiving, participating in CrossFit, or being an active member of the UD.rocket club.
What is unique about his promotion is he was picked during a time when there were few captain slots open and you had to go before a board and provide letters of recommendation. Since then, the Air Force has returned to automatically giving the promotion after being an officer in the Air Force for four years. This is extremely special to have been picked, which is why they provided him his own promotion ceremony.
Ruttle will be moving to Colorado Springs, Colo. in July to take a new assignment with the Air Force.
