All-Stars Gear Up For Area 1 Clashes

A field of five Payson Little League baseball and softball All-Stars is primed and ready to make runs at postseason honors.

In Area 1 tournaments, 9-10 years, 10-11 years and 11-12 years baseball teams and 9-10 years, and 11-12 years softball teams are representing Payson.

The All-Stars were chosen at the end of the regular season in a voting of coaches.

Area 1 tournament games are being played in Payson, Winslow and Flagstaff.

The 11-12 softball stars tipped off postseason play Tuesday, June 25 at Rumsey Park with a 9-5 win over the Winslow All-Stars.

Coach Andre Newell is predicting his team has the talent to advance to the state finals and possibly to the national showdown.

The 9-10 years baseball team begins pursuit of an Area title at 6:30 p.m. July 1 on Rumsey 3 in Payson against Holbrook.

The 11-12 years baseball team opens on July 2 in West Flagstaff against the winner of a first round game pitting Flagstaff against Continental.

Manager Kacy Parker’s 10-11 years baseball team debuts at 7:30 July 2 in Winslow against host Winslow.

Parker spent much of the week in Prescott helping fight the Doce Fire, but said he would be in Winslow to manage the All-Star team in its tournament games.

The 9-10 years softball team managed by Tara Smith begins play July 6 in Winslow against the winner of a first round game between Show Low and Silver Creek.

The winners of Area 1 tournaments advanced to the District 1 tournament to play champions from Area 2.

The district winners earn berths in the Arizona State Little League Tournament.

State champions, which Payson has never produced, go on to the national tournament.
