Governor Has Risen To The Challenges At Hand

Editor:

I didn’t feel that Jan Brewer had the needed and necessary aptitude and educational background when she ascended to the governorship in 2009. Her prior positions as a county supervisor, state legislator and secretary of state didn’t seem to be enough to prepare her to be the highest elected official in Arizona. Sure enough, her 13-second “brain freeze” in her debate with former Phoenix mayor and Attorney General Terry Goddard didn’t increase my confidence in her capabilities. Her “finger wagging” at the president of the United States when he came to visit Arizona and her seemingly incessant blaming of the federal government for most if not all of our own Arizona problems further eroded what little faith I had in her leadership acumen.

However, times change, things change, and people change. Governor Brewer’s deft handling and maneuvering around the obstructionists and recalcitrant members of her own political party (count all three of our Rim Country legislators in this category) in the Legislature this recently passed session was brilliant! She used her position and her power to pass a budget and to include much-needed medical coverage for thousands of our citizens (many of those right here in Gila County).

Governor Brewer has grown into her job and I hope her “reaching across the aisle” portends more bipartisan efforts in the future for her and the middle of the road legislators that represent the vast majority of the voters in Arizona.

Kudos, thank you, and a job well done, Governor. You have risen to the challenges at hand and been very successful!
