A kayaker drowned this weekend in the East Verde River when their kayak flipped, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
Little is known about the events surrounding the accident, but a group of friends were reportedly kayaking from Payson to Fountain Hills Saturday when a person went over a waterfall, flipped and could not right themselves, said Lt. Tim Scott with the GCSO.
It took the other kayakers roughly 30 minutes to reach the person, but when they did, the person was already dead, he said.
The sheriff’s office didn’t learn of the events until late Sunday night when the group finally got cell service.
The kayakers told authorities they pulled the person’s body from the water and left it on shore, marking the area so a helicopter could find the body, Scott said.
As of Monday morning, the GCSO and helicopter officials were working on a recovery mission.
The person’s name has not been released.
