Tonto Basin Elementary School Superintendent Mary Lou Weatherly resigned at the school board meeting on Tuesday, March 12.
Her last day will be June 30.
The board meeting started at 3:00 p.m. and immediately went into executive session for 90 minutes for “discussion or consideration of employment, assignment, or evaluation of the Superintendent,” said the board agenda.
Upon reconvening the meeting, Weatherly stood in front of bleachers full of Tonto Basin parents, students, grandparents and residents to give her Superintendent’s report. Channel 3 from Phoenix filmed the meeting.
After her report, the board officially accepted her resignation.
Weatherly has only been in the Superintendent position in Tonto Basin for a little over a year. Parents have complained about her management style and discipline, insisting the was trying to run the rural school like an urban school. Reportedly, parents had withdrawn almost a quarter of the children from the school.
