Only three matches into the 2013 season, the Payson High golf team has nailed down the second of five qualifying scores needed to advance to the season-ending Division III state tournament.
The Horns secured the second qualifier by posting a winning card of 160 during a March 12 nine-hole match at Chaparral Pines against longtime rivals Show Low and Snowflake.
The Horns picked up their first qualifying score on March 5 at Chaparral Pines with a match winning tally of 148 that bested the qualifying tally of 168 by 20 strokes.
During Tuesday’s three-way showdown, the Cougars came up short in their bid to pick up a qualifier of their own, finishing second at 197. The Lobos trailed with a 204.
Individually, sophomore Dean Harpe took low medalist honors with a one-under par 34.
Team spokesperson Rene Apps said the day prior during a practice session, Harpe shot a sizzling 30 round.
Also for Payson in the “play five, take four” scores format, senior Jeff Kelley posted a 36, Mason Ridley scored a 43, Kelsey Bossert finished at 47 and Ben Myer contributed a 54.
The best score turned in by a Lobo or Cougar player was a 43 by Snowflake’s Tyson Binnie.
Following the match, coach Denny Morse thanked Chaparral head golf pro Bob Irving and all the club members for allowing the Longhorns to host the match at CP.
The Longhorns travel tomorrow, March 16, to Mt. Graham Municipal golf course for the 18-hole Thatcher Invitational.
Snowflake will have an opportunity avenge Tuesday’s loss to the Horns at a rematch March 19 on the Lobos home course at Snowflake. The nine-hole match tees off at 3 p.m.
