A 49-year-old Mesa man died Monday afternoon after crashing his all-terrain vehicle north of town.
Richard Melcher was driving on Forest Road 296, in the area of Rim Trail, when he lost control of his ATV for unknown reasons and flipped, said Lt. Tim Scott with the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
Melcher was able to start the quad back up and continue riding, Scott said.
Less than a mile from his family’s home, however, Melcher passed away on the quad on Rim Trail Road (FR 32).
He was traveling alone and not wearing a helmet. There is no indication drug or alcohol played a role in the wreck, Scott said.
Melcher is the son of former GCSO Chief Deputy Tom Melcher, who recently retired.
