The second power point rankings of 2013 have been released and the PHS baseball team is sitting in good shape, but the softball team is nowhere to be found.
The Lady Horns are not ranked because the team has not played a sufficient number of games or “qualifying results.” PHS finished 3-3 in the Wickenburg Wrangler Invitational, but tournament games do not count in power point rankings. Following the Wickenburg tournament, the Lady Horns had to forfeit or cancel at least three games because several of the PHS players were too ill to play.
The baseball team, which had a 5-1 record when power points were compiled early this week, is ranked seventh among 53 Division III teams with 7.1603 points. All six teams ranked ahead of the Horns sport unbeaten records. Bisbee (4-0) is top ranked and Mingus (7-0) is sitting at second. Trailing are River Valley (third, 6-0), Scottsdale Christian (fourth, 3-0), Wilcox (fifth, 5-0) and Thatcher (sixth, 3-0).
Somewhat ironically, Fountain Hills — a talent-laden team almost everyone expects to contend for the D-III state championship — is ranked 13th with a 3-1 record.
But that will most likely change as the season rolls on and the Falcons have more opportunities to pile up “W’s.”
At season’s end, the power point rankings will be used to seed qualifying teams into the 24-team state tournament.
Those schools with higher rankings will be seeded in the opening round against lower ranked teams, giving the most successful schools during the regular baseball season an advantage.
Last year, the Longhorn baseball team did not qualify for the state tournament, but the Lady Longhorns earned a berth as a top seed and advanced to the state semifinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Bourgade.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association compiles the power points each Tuesday at about 10 a.m.
