The “Booby Prize” is not the award Payson Men’s Golf Association members are usually shooting for when they hit the links, but that’s what a four-person team received following a four-man scramble March 13 at Payson Golf Course.
Rick Korth, Jack Greenshield, Andrew Shuy and Dennis Schwerbs were on the receiving end of the dubious honor for finishing last overall with a tournament high 71.
At the other end of the spectrum, a card of 62 earned the team of Terry Lindsey, Bill Shed and John Calderwood a first-place finish.
With a 63, Jesse Smith, Gary Campbell, Dick Ceyler and Popeye Clay were second.
Russ Morris, Jerry McGuire, Virgil Cly and Troy Neal were third at 65.
Neal, a frequent closest to the pin and tournament winner in past seasons, returned to PMGA play after sitting out much of last year due to an injury.
With a 66, Ron Fischer, Mike Eilenfeldt, Ralph Lindo and Dave Rutter were fourth. In the closest to the pin completion, Ed Kuhs scored the best tee shot of the day, hitting to within 5 feet, 6 inches on No. 5.
Russ Morris (No 2; 18 feet, 4 inches), Doug Talbot (No. 14; 6 feet, 1 inch) and Cly (No. 8; 9 feet, 11 1/2 inches and No. 17; 9 feet, 2 inches) also pocketed prize money.
