In a blind draw that allowed Payson Men’s Golf Association member Jesse Smith to play on two different 2-man-best-ball teams, the longtime Rim Country golfer pocketed prize money as a second and third place finisher.
The unusual scenario unfolded March 20 at Payson Golf Course where Smith teamed with Sil Egler for a 58 and runner-up honors.
Smith also played in the tournament as Doug Talbot’s partner and the two were third at 60.
The bronze medal honors, however, came only after a chip off with Larry Smith and Don Gyde who had also finished at 60.
With the loss in the chip off, Larry Smith and Gyde fell to fourth.
The duo of Herb Sherman and Mike Anderson emerged from the fray as tournament champs with a 57.
Gary Campbell and Ed Bossert tallied a 62 and were fifth.
Larry Smith pocketed closest to the pin prize money on No. 5 with a tee shot that landed 3 feet, 9 inches from an ace.
Stan Eggen won on No. 8 at 2 feet, 7 inches.
Ron Fischer (No. 2; 21 feet, 11 inches), Bell Shedd (No. 14; 8 feet, 4 inches) and Russ Morris (No. 17; 7 feet, 4 inches) were also closest to the pin winners.
