The Payson Longhorn baseball team pulled off the upset of the 2013 season whipping No. 1 seeded and championship favorite Show Low 5-3 in the quarter final round of the Division III state tournament.

Playing at the Surprise Sports Complex in Surprise, the win over the Cougars sends the Horns into the state semifinals to play No. 13 Empire at 6:30 p.m.May 10 also in Surprise.

In the state tournament, which began April 30, PHS opened with a 4-3 win over Rio Rico and followed it up with 9-0 victory vs. Blue Ridge.

With three consecutive tournament victories, the Longhorns find themselves in the state final four – a lofty place the team hasn’t reached since 1999 when the Horns won Payson’s only state baseball championship.
