Members of the Payson Men’s Golf Association have wrapped up the first round of their three-week match play tournament.

The fray began on May 1 and wraps up May 15. All three rounds are being played at Payson Golf Course.

Match play scoring is different from the usual PMGA tournament formats in that golfers compete hole by hole and the golfer who wins the most holes, wins the match.

The score of a match play is rendered rationally in that the scores tell golfers not how many holes each golfer has won, but how many more holes than his opponent the golfer in the lead has won.

For example, if a golfer has won five holes and his opponent has won four the score is not shown as 5 to 4 rather, 1-up for the leader and 1-down for the opponent.

PMGA A flight winners were: Russ Morris over Tim Ernst (3/2); Bob Judson over Larry Smith (DQ); Gary Campbell over Oscar Garcia (1-up); Terry Lindsey over Don Castleman (5/4); Ken Althoff over Jack Proietto (5/3) and Alex Armenta over Mike McKee (2-up).

In B flight winners were: John Calderwood over Gary Vaplon (2-up); Ed Bossert over Popeye Clay (3/4) and Herb Sherman over Jack Greenshield (1-up).

In C flight, winners were: Ralph Lindo over Sil Egler (2-up); Doug Talbot over Ed Quigley (4/2); Jim Salgleish (3/2); and Ross Robertson over Spencer Roth (2-up).

In closest-to-the-pin competition winners were: Ed Bossert, No. 2, 5 feet, 10-1.2 inches; Jerry McGuire, No. 5, 2 feet, 7-1/2 inches; Gary Vaplon, No. 8, 14 feet, 5 inches; Richard Harding, No. 14, 12 feet, 8 inches; and Alex Armenta, No. 17, 7 feet.
