“Turn Out the Lights, the Party’s Over,” is the song Dandy Don Meredith would have crooned had he been announcing the final innings of the PHS baseball and softball teams’ state semifinal tournament losses on Friday evening.
Just as the song signaled the end of many NFL Monday Night Football games, Meredith announced, it would have marked the conclusion of both Payson High team’s pursuit of state championships. The Lady Longhorns lost 14-4 to Winslow in an error-filled game at Rose Mofford Complex and the Payson baseball team fell 13-3 to Tucson Empire at Surprise Stadium.
Because both tournament, were single elimination, the seasons are over for PHS baseball and softball.
In the baseball team’s the loss, Empire scored three runs in the first and second innings, another three in the fourth and and four in the fifth to erase any doubt which team would be advancing to Division III’s state championship game.
The Lady Longhorns kept the showdown vs. Winslow close until the fourth and fifth innings when errors allowed the Lady Bulldogs to score a game deciding nine runs.
The baseball team wraps up the season with a 20-10 record and the Lady Horns compiled a 29-5 mark.
