A Payson High School golf team that dominated opponents most of the regular season couldn’t continue it blitzkrieg in the Division III state tournament, finishing a disappointing sixth place.

Playing May 10-11 at Antelope Hills near Prescott, Payson’s final team tally of 632 was well off the pace of the state champion Valley Christian that easily won the title with a 596.

Horizon Honors was second and Estrella Foothills third.

Individually for Payson, Dean Harpe was the team’s top finisher taking sixth overall at 145. On the first day, he carded a 73 and followed it up with a 72.

Jeffrey Kelley’s 72 kept him in medal contention during opening day, but his 80 on the second round eliminated his gold medal hopes. Nonetheless his 54 was good enough for 22nd in the 96-qualifier field.

Also for Payson — Mason Ridley had an 82 and 83 for a 165 and Tod McCarthy posted a 168 (84-84).

With the season at an end, three players who will graduate with the Class of 2013 are set to attend college. Kelley is bound for Arizona Christian, Katie Schouten will go to BYU and Kelsey Bossert to Mesa College.

Several players will also continue their links endeavors, playing through the off-season in state youth leagues.
