Northern Gila County Fair T-shirt contest entries sought
For the first time ever, the Northern Gila County Fair will have T-shirts for sale during the fair. But to do that, a design is needed.
Submit an 8-inch-by-10-inch line drawing in black ink of your idea of what the fair is all about. The drawing must include the words: Northern Gila County Fair.
Any age may enter and you may submit more than one drawing. Design drawings must be postmarked by May 30.

Rodeo Parade theme contest
The Zane Grey Kiwanis is seeking the public’s help in choosing a theme for the 2013 World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo parade.

The winner will ride and be recognized in the parade. Ideas for the parade theme are due May 31.
Dr Jass & the Heartbeats
Dixieland jazz will be presented from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, May 24 at The Journigan House patio, 400 W. Main St., Payson. Dr. Claudio Zamorano will play cornet and provide vocals. He will be accompanied by Mike Buskirk, slide trombone, double-billed euphonium, vocals; Susanne Knighton, upright bass, washboard and vocals; Dale Knighton, banjo, vocals and silly noisemakers; Hawkeye Mathews, clarinet; and Gerry Reynolds, drums and cymbals.
John Carpino performs live at 5 p.m., Saturday, May 25 at Mountain Top Brewing Company, 401 N. Tyler Parkway, Payson.
Cinnamon Twist will be playing live at The Journigan House, 400 W. Main St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday May 25.
The duo will perform from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 26 at Ayothaya Thai Cafe, 404 E. Highway 260.
Improve hunting skills
Hunter’s education classes will be offered by Jan Nash in May and June.
The class will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at the American Legion Hall on east Highway 260; the June 2 class will be at the Jim Jones Shooting Range from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Brush pits closed
The brush pits operated by the Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Youth plan car wash
Get your vehicle spruced up for the Memorial Day Weekend and help some great young people earn money to go to an important national competition.
The Payson Rim Quizkids are raising money to travel to the World Quiz in Indianapolis. They will have a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 25 at Jiffy Lube on Highway 260.

Riders of the Purple Sage
Tickets on sale now for Historical Society benefit
“Riders of the Purple Sage One Hundred Years Later” will be the theme for the Northern Gila County Historical Society benefit Saturday, June 8.
The event will be at the Chaparral Pines Clubhouse from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include dinner, music by Bill Camp, no-host bar, sweets sale, auction of special centennial edition of “Riders of the Purple Sage” and local historian Stan Brown who will be there to sign his latest book, “Payson: An Arizona Frontier Town.”
Tickets are $35 per person and are available at the Rim Country Museum in Green Valley Park. Reservations must be made in advance.

Shoofly Quilters event
The Shoofly Quilters are hosting a Quilting and Craft Swap Meet at the American Legion on East Highway 260 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 28. This is a great opportunity to purchase quilting supplies, craft supplies, quilts, craft projects and clothing.
Summer meals for kids
The nutrition office at Payson Unified Schools, along with the Arizona Department of Education, has two sites open this summer where kids 18 and under can have breakfast and lunch for free. Meals will be served at Rim Country Middle School and Payson Elementary School. This program is open to all kids and this year parents who bring a child will also eat for free. Breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The program starts Tuesday, May 28 and continues through Friday, July 19. There will be no meals served July 4 and 5 due to the Fourth of July holiday.
Rockhounds have fun this summer at GCC
Gila Community College will be offering a class on Rocks and Minerals (GLG015) during the 2013 summer session. It is intended for the beginner and collector and includes simple methods of identification
The class is from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Fridays. This and all the other summer classes begin Tuesday, May 28 and go through Monday, July 22. Check the entire schedule online at www.gilaccc.org.
Breakfast for a buck
Ponderosa Bible Church Men’s Ministry of will be hosting a breakfast at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1. All men of the community are cordially invited. The menu consists of orange juice, scrambled eggs, ham, toast, fruit bowl and coffee — all for only $1.
Miki West will be the featured speaker. West was born in Minnesota and has lived in many states throughout the nation, as well as in Berlin, Germany. He and his wife, Carol, currently reside in Gilbert, Ariz.
His many jobs have included store clerk, youth pastor, janitor, Army private, infantry officer, detox clinic clerk, insurance salesman, pastor, Army chaplain and hospital chaplain.
Relay for Life
Relay for Life generates funds to fight against cancer. This year, Rim Country’s Relay for Life will be held at the high school track from noon to midnight, Saturday, June 1.
Survivors are encouraged to participate in the survivor lap at noon. If you want to honor a victim of cancer or a survivor of cancer, obtain commemorative luminarias from Payson Public Library, Ace Hardware, Payson Senior Circle or the Chamber of Commerce. Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260 (across from Tiny’s Restaurant) invites Rim residents and visitors to enjoy a Sunday Summer Breakfast on June 2 between 9:40 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.
Join the congregation, either before the breakfast for the 8:30 a.m. traditional service or after the breakfast for the 10:30 a.m. praise service. The theme for the Sunday services is “Friendship.” The breakfast is free and you also receive a gift bag.
4th Annual Charity Golf Event
Payson Area Habitat for Humanity (PAHH) is conducting its 4th Annual Charity Golf Event at Chaparral Pines Golf Club in Payson Sunday, June 2. This year’s format is a two-person scramble, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Southwestern Gospel recording artist Phil Dickey will be bringing a concert of praise and encouragement to Ponderosa Bible Church, 1800 N. Beeline Highway, Payson at 6 p.m., Sunday, June 2.
He has shared inspirational and Southwestern Gospel music for more than 40 years in churches and other gatherings throughout Arizona, Utah and California, as well as overseas while serving in the Navy. His singing style goes beyond entertainment by bringing out the meaning behind the words, and his concerts minister encouragement as well as a challenge to the listeners to grow in their faith.
Almost New Thrift Shop sale
Select from clothes, shoes, belts and more — anything else you wear (except for jewelry) that can fit into one of the shop’s bags and get it all for just $1. This sale will take place the first Monday of every month. The next sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday, June 3.

Summer Reading Program
Registration for the Summer Reading Program is now open. The program starts the first week of June. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged. There are programs planned for children ages 6 months to 18 years.

Summer Recreation Program
Registration is open and continues through the course of the 2013 Summer Recreation Program presented by the the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
The program is for children ages 6 to 12. Youngsters can be registered for one or all seven weeks. The program will be held in the Rim Country Middle School gym and incorporates fun, physical and cultural activities, along with occasional field trips. This is not a drop-in program; children must be pre-registered by Friday of the previous week. Lunch will be served each day.
Cost is $30 per child. Camps dates are: May 28-30*, June 3-6, June 10-13, June 17-20, June 24-27, July 1-3 and July 8-11. The program goes from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday-Thursday, except where noted.

Yard sale donations sought
The Pine-Strawberry Riff Raff Club is accepting donations for its upcoming annual Naked Yard Sale, to be held June 15.
Bishop Storage Sheds has donated the use of two sheds for collecting and storing donations. The sheds, number 11 and 12, are located in Pine, behind Bishop Realty. The sheds will be open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the sale. The sale will be located by Payson Concrete.
