Memorial Day ceremonies in Rim Country will mix solemn commemorations with some fun events as well.
The Payson Patriotic Events Committee and the Town of Payson are presenting four different formal tributes to veterans who have died in service to the country and honoring those who have defended and continue to defend it. The programs will take place over the course of two days — Sunday, May 26 and Monday, May 27.
• The Annual Pioneer Cemetery Tribute: Sunday, 8:30 a.m. (corner of South Vista and Mesa).
• The annual Mountain Meadows Tribute in Round Valley: Sunday, 10 a.m. at the Mountain Meadows Memorial Park, Messinger Payson Funeral Home.
• Flag-raising ceremony: Monday, 8 a.m. Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. Program includes speakers, patriotic and bagpipe music as well as the national anthem, an invocation and benediction.
• Memorial Day Tribute: 10 a.m. Monday at the Green Valley Park Veterans Memorial, includes speakers and special military and musical presentations.
The Pine Strawberry Memorial Day Arts & Crafts Festival: May 25 and 26 to raise appreciation of quality, handmade arts and crafts and raise funds to support non-profit community groups. Includes the work of more than 80 artists, arts and crafts demonstrations, food booths, and a pancake breakfast and a Navajo taco fund-raiser sponsored by the P/S Senior Citizens Affairs Foundation.
The Library Friends Book Sale and Raffle: May 24, 25 and 26, in conjunction with the Arts & Crafts Guild Memorial Day Weekend Art & Crafts Festival. They are raffling off a fully stocked “Picnic on the Go Basket” — come get books, movies and raffle tickets and support the Friends of the Pine Library.
Christopher Creek Firebelles’ Arts & Crafts Festival: Saturday, May 25, at the fire station and the Tall Pines Market.
Tonto Village’s Memorial Day celebration begins at noon, Saturday, May 25. The Hellsgate Fireflies will be helping the Double D Café and Saloon celebrate the holiday weekend with a bake sale, T-shirt and cap sale, and offering their very own cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook” for a nominal fee of $10. There will also be live music by Rockin’ Ron Gibson.
