Payson High School slugger Nick McMullen has been named Division III, Section III baseball co-player of the year along with Andrew Bryniarski and Nick Wojtysiak, both of Fountain Hills.

“Really, all three players are outstanding and deserving, but I am biased on how good Nick is,” said PHS coach Brian Young.

The three-way tie, Young believes, might have been a first in the voting. “I heard a couple of coaches say they have never seen a three-way tie.”

In addition to McMullen being named co-player of the year, he was earlier named to the Division III, Section III first team, as were Bryniarski and Wojtysiak.

During the 2013 season, McMullen compiled a robust .515 batting average with 11 home runs, 41 runs scored and 47 RBIs.

Once on the base paths, he was the pitcher’s and catcher’s worst nightmare, successfully stealing 14 out of 15 bases.

McMullen, a junior, was also sometimes called upon to pitch and finished with a 3.39 ERA and a 3-2 record.

When the All-Division III team is announced next week, McMullen is expected to add a first team selection to his growing list of honors.
