Once again, to celebrate the great outdoors and welcome summer, the Town of Payson will be putting on an outdoor sports competition, the Arizona Mountain High Games, co-title sponsored by Rim Country Power Sports and Native Air.

The Mountain High Games will be held on May 31 through June 2 at the Payson Event Center.

The events included in this year’s competition include the Mogollon Monster Mudder (5K mud run), an archery competition, ATV trail rides, and an old-fashioned horseshoe tournament.

Participants in the ATV rides will experience some of Rim Country’s most seldom seen backcountry. They will also enjoy a barbecue dinner, poker run and trail riding entertainment.

Amateurs, professionals and 4-H clubs are all invited to participate in the archery tournament that will start at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1. Entry fees are $30 per family (immediate family members); $20 for adults; $15 for youths; $10 for 4-H participants (or included in family fee); and PeeWee shooters can compete for free.

Mogollon Monster Mudder

In coordination with local and regional fire departments, this year the Mountain High Games will include a 5K mud run called the Mogollon Monster Mudder.

This is a 5K mountain trail run with natural and man-made obstacles, challenging ups and downs, rocky, wooded and wet terrain, shallow water crossings and lots of mud. The course is being constructed by Rim Country Regional Firefighters.

This will be a timed event, with emphasis on fun and teamwork — helping each other finish safely. Costumes encouraged.

Registration is going on right now! You can pre-register online at mountainhighgames.

Registration is $65. An official event T-shirt goes to the first 350 people who pre-register. More than 200 have already registered to participate.

The 5K will be run in “waves.” The event’s first wave of 50 will start at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 1, with subsequent waves of up to 50 starting every 15 minutes thereafter.

For registration information, please visit or call the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department at (928) 474-5242, ext. 7.

Sprint Triathlon

The annual Sprint Triathlon starts at 7 a.m., Saturday, June 8 at Taylor Pool in Rumsey Park.

The event consists of a 500-yard swim, 14-mile bike ride and 5K run. Register early. The top 175 finishers will receive a participation medal. The fee is $50 for individuals or $75 for a team. The event is for those 15 and older.
