A scammer claiming to be Gila County Sheriff Adam Shepherd is on the prowl.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office says someone is calling residents and identifying themselves as Shepherd to confirm prize money won from the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes.

“Reports have indicated that the calls are showing up on caller ID with the Gila County Sheriff’s Office phone number.”

The caller says that in order to claim the prize money, the person needs to send in $1,800 to receive the $6 million grand prize.

“Please be cautious of any organization asking for money in exchange for prizes,” the sheriff’s office said in press release.

“Be aware that the sheriff’s office will not call and confirm prize winnings or request money to be turned over to someone on their behalf.”

Do not release any personal information to the caller.

If calls persist, contact the GCSO at (928) 425-4449 (800) 635-8017.
