Anyone wishing to serve on the Gila Community College Board who lives in Payson, Pine, Strawberry or several other Rim County communities can fill out an application in the Gila County Schools office.
Incumbent Tom Loeffler resigned several week ago to protest a decision by the board to slash tuition despite the lack of a study on the potential financial impact of the reduction.
This week, Gila County School Superintendent Linda O’Dell announced the timeline and process for filling the vacancy in District 1. She plans to fill the slot by Dec. 2. The person will serve until at least the general election in the fall of 2014.
Registered voters residing in the following Gila County precincts can apply: Payson 1, Payson 3, Payson 7, Payson 8 and Pine-Strawberry West.
GCC district boundaries changed in the 2010 redistricting process, so potential board members should make sure they live in one of the five precincts listed above.
Potential board members must complete a short application and go through an interview. O’Dell observed that the signed application document affirms a candidate’s eligibility and provides basic background information as well as insight about relevant professional and life experiences.
Pick up application packets at the Gila Community College Payson Campus during regular business hours — Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can download an application online at www.gilacountyschools.org.
The deadline for submission of application documents is 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15.
O’Dell expects to announce her selection by Dec. 2 to allow the new members to be sworn in and eligible to participate in the next district’s governing board meeting.
In accordance with state law, an election for the remaining two years of the four-year term will be held as part of the 2014 general election. The person appointed and other interested parties from the Gila Community College District 1 can run for election to the position at that time.
