Payson, Tonto Basin, National Parks and other groups will all sponsor events and ceremonies to honor the nation’s veterans, as well as those currently serving.
Tonto Basin will hold its traditional parade at 11 a.m. on Monday.
The National Parks and many Forest Service sites will offer a fee-free weekend throughout the nation, including Tonto National Monument and many fee-charging sites in the Tonto National Forest.
Payson will present its traditional lineup of Veterans Day events at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11 in the Payson High School Auditorium. This year, the Payson event will include a special tribute to the U.S. Merchant Marine, which played a key role in the Allied victory during World War II and suffered heavy casualties.
The program at the Payson event will include remarks by Payson Mayor Kenny Evans, Payson Police Chief Don Engler, a representative of the Payson Fire Department and a representative of the Tonto Apache Tribal Council.
The program also includes music by the Payson Choral Society and a patriotic medley of service hymns.
After the program, the Rim Country Classic Auto Club will take a selected number of veterans to lunch in a convoy escorted by the Vietnam Legacy Motorcycle Club.
