Kaitie’s Closet’s annual New Shoe Drive is in November and December to help area children in need get through the winter with new, warm shoes. Pink drop boxes are at several locations for donations. Salvation Army needs help
Volunteers are needed for the Salvation Army’s Holiday Bell Ringer program. Collections will be taken at Safeway, Walmart, Walgreens, Bashas’ and Big Lots every Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting the Friday after Thanksgiving and also on Monday and Tuesday the week of Christmas, ending Christmas Eve. Ringers serve two-hour shifts.

All donated funds stay in Payson to help the people in need. Salvation Army assists with utilities, rent, lodging, food, gas, clothing, travel and much more.

Medicare enrollment assistance
Medicare Open Enrollment continues through Dec. 7. State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselors will screen and provide application assistance for Medicare Savings Programs and Low Income Subsidy program for assistance with Medicare Part D out-of-pocket costs, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Payson Senior Center, 514 W. Turkey Trot 5K
The annual Turkey Trot 5K at Green Valley Park is Saturday, Nov. 23. Race registration is open at the Payson Parks and Recreation office.
The pre-registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 15. All pre-registrants will receive a cozy sweatshirt with this year's logo on it. Day-of entrants are not guaranteed a sweatshirt.
Day-of registration starts at 8 a.m. and the race will begin at approximately 9 a.m. The race starts and ends at Green Valley Park. It is open to ages 10 and older and the cost is $40 per person, which includes a sweatshirt.
Winners of this year’s race will receive a turkey sponsored by Safeway, Inc. The top three places in each age group will also receive medals.

Boulders Trail PATS Hike
Join neighbors and visitors at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16 for a PATS Hike of Boulders Trail. This beautiful route features fantastic views of the Granite Dells. The hike starts at the end of Phoenix St. The excursion is 2.2 miles and is ranked “easy” for level of intensity. Dress appropriately, with closed-toe footwear and bring water.
Come to the Jim Jones Range, south of town, for a Turkey Shoot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16.
Sponsored by the Tonto Rim Sports Club, with turkeys provided by Safeway, participants could win as many as four turkeys for only $2 per shot.
Try one or all four of the shooting options: archery, best shot in group at 25 yards; handgun, best shot in group at 15 yards; rifle, best shot in group at 100 yards; shotgun with slugs, best shot in group at 50 yards.

Humane Society open house
The Humane Society of Central Arizona has teamed up with Julia Randall Elementary students to design the 2013 Wall of Hope fund-raising murals.
The display holds 200 envelopes. Each envelope has been designed by a student and contains a number that represents a possible donation amount from $1 to $200.
There will be an open house and showing of the Wall of Hope from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 16 at the shelter, located at 605 W. Wilson Court (just south of Main Street off South McLane Road). Enjoy cookies and cider as you browse through the envelopes on the Wall of Hope looking for the perfect one (or more) for your donation.
Also available will be the 2014 HSCAZ calendar featuring shelter alumni. The calendars, which make great holiday gifts, are $12 each; all proceeds benefit the homeless animals of Rim Country.

Guided hike of Dude Fire site
Join the Northern Gila County Historical Society volunteers on a hike to the Dude Fire site at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19. Chuck Jacobs, retired fire chief, will guide the walk. Participants will meet at the Rim Country Museum parking lot at 1 p.m. and carpooling will be arranged at that time. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water. November Chamber Mixer
The November Chamber Mixer will be held at the Payson Elks Lodge from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Door prizes are needed — a prize donation will earn contributors a one-minute commercial for their business.

The Payson Regional Medical Center’s Senior Circle will host Tanya Schlegel-Ryder of PRMC Home Health Care for a Lunch and Learn from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20.
For adults who need clinical support, receiving medical care doesn’t have to mean leaving home. The care needed can be provided by health professionals in the home.

Tamales for Toys
The 24th Annual Tamales for Toys is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23 at Gerardo’s Firewood Café, 512 N. Beeline Highway. The event benefits Payson Community Kids and is presented by the Payson Fire Department, Mazatzal Optimists Club, Gerardo’s Firewood Café, Northern Gila County Firefighters Local 4135 and the generosity of Rim Country residents.
Bring a new, unwrapped toy to the café and enjoy two tamales, beans, chips and salsa (the cost is $7 a plate without a toy).
Those interested can also purchase a dozen tamales to go (or delivered free within the Payson town limits) for $18 if ordered in advance by Monday, Nov. 18, or $20 if ordered the day of the event.

Plan to visit Pine the evening of Saturday, Nov. 23 for the annual Tellabration event. A fund-raising dinner and show tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased by Nov. 16, they are available at the Pine Senior Thrift Shop at the Community Center on N. Highway 87. A meet and greet the storytellers is at 5 p.m., with dinner served by 5:30 p.m. in the Senior Dining Room. The show is at 7 p.m. and show-only tickets, available at the door, are $5 per person. Refreshments will be available at the show, which will be in the Cultural Hall at the Community Center.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Payson, Bashas’, Safeway and Channel 12 News are joining forces to collect turkeys.
Last year, St. Vincent de Paul distributed 300 turkey dinner boxes. This year, the need is even greater.
On Tuesday Nov. 26, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers will be at Bashas’ from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accept turkeys, non-perishable food items and cash donations. Turkeys, food items and cash donations can also be dropped off on or before Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the S.V.d.P. Food Bank, 511 S. St. Philip St., Payson. Call (928) 474-9104 for details.
The food bank is open from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays. All donations will be kept in the Payson Rim Country area and distributed by The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Payson to those in need.
Payson Elks Community Thanksgiving Dinner
