Police say an intoxicated man crashed a lime green ATV into bushes Wednesday after reportedly throwing a fit in a local jewelry store and storming out.
Paramedics propped the bloodied man up on the curb just minutes after the ATV crashed into a thicket north of the Manzanita and Highway 260 intersection, just outside the Big Lots parking lot. He was flown to a Scottsdale hospital.
Moments before crashing, the man went into Payson Jewelers at about 3:10 p.m. with several wooden boxes and a ceramic clock to sell, according to store staff.
The staff told him they were not interested in the items and only the owner could approve collectible purchases and he was out of town. But the man grew increasingly agitated, store staff said.
“He said, ‘Well, I have no food and I have no money.’ And I said, ‘You know, I am really sorry.’ He turned around, lifted the clock above his head and smashed it on the ground,” one staffer said.
The man reportedly then cursed, slammed the front door and got on an ATV. He nearly struck a vehicle in the parking lot before driving off like “crazy,” staff said.
Staff said they smelled alcohol on the man.
