The Oct. 13 jazz concert by Tony Vacca is a special “bring a friend” (for free) event. Family and friends who haven’t attended one of the Payson Friends of Jazz and Community Presbyterian Church performances this year are welcome to come with you, free of making the usual donation of $5.
Vacca will perform at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13 at Payson Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.
Vacca has had a prestigious musical career, performing with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Doc Severinsen and numerous others.

Rim Country Quilt Roundup
The 9th Annual Rim Country Quilt Roundup is coming to town. The regional show of quilts, décor items, clothing, accessories and more is Friday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Event Center. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Rim Country Coalition and the Dimi Cafe will be sponsoring an Octoberfest at the Dimi Cafe from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11. Each person attending will receive a free root beer float. Cinnamon Twist will provide music.

TAKE TWO, featuring Jim West & Kathleen Kelly, will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at the Historic Journigan House on Main Street.

Brush pit schedule
The Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting: Saturday, Oct. 12 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson. Sunday, Oct. 13 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.
Lioness Bake Sale
The Payson Lioness Club will have its annual bake sale at Walmart from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12. Get holiday treats in the freezer now and support Lions Sight & Hearing projects and other local charities. Sugar-free treats will be available. Free ‘ObamaCare’ seminar
Tom Russell will present a free educational seminar entitled, “How ObamaCare Impacts You and How it All Works” at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 at Tiny’s Restaurant 600 E. Highway 260 in Payson.
This seminar applies to people under 65. ObamaCare impacts people who are not on Medicare. In 2014, Medicare will work essentially the way it has in 2013. Medicare beneficiaries must be wary of anyone who phones or stops by, saying they are there to enroll them in “ObamaCare” and asking for personal information.
Russell is an independent health insurance broker, representing more than 35 insurance companies. He has served the Rim Country for 19 years, and his office is behind Fargo’s Steakhouse. Reservations are not needed, but if you have questions you can reach Tom’s office at (928) 474-1233.
Celtic celebration Oct. 12
The Rim Country Celts and the Historic Journigan House will sponsor a Ceilidh (Kay-Lee) to be held at Journigan House, 202 W. Main St., Payson starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. There will be no cover charge or admission fee to attend this program and all persons are invited to attend.
Musical guests for the night will include the Celtic duo, Cinnamon Twist and the Payson Session Musicians. Well-known local storyteller Alice Natale will share Celtic stories. Other activities during the evening will include a poetry/limerick contest, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.
A special meal including corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes and salad bar will be provided by Journigan House for $14 per person. There is no obligation to purchase the meal and participants may also order off the regular menu. Persons attending are also invited to wear their favorite Celtic apparel. Book release party
Attention all Percy Jackson fans – House of Hades by Rick Riordan, hit the shelves this week.
Children ages 10-18 are invited to the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Rd, for a challenging, after-hours release party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12. A hot dog dinner and snacks will be provided. Five brand new copies of House of Hades will be given out as prizes during this event.
The Holiday Craft Bazaar will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at Messinger Community Room, 901 S. Westerly Road. Beautiful, handmade crafts and homemade goodies will be available for holiday gift giving.

The Payson First Southern Baptist Church will host the group Handmaidens in concert at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13. The group includes Jeannine Oechsner, Eileen Soffera, Carla Thompson and Samantha Parsons.

The sixth grade of Rim Country Middle School is having a Science Expo in the school library Thursday, Oct. 17. The expo will showcase science research and reporting done by sixth-graders on questions about weather. Presentations by the students will be made during the following times: 10:15 a.m. to 11:10 a.m.; 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 2:25 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
GLH Foundation Costume Party
It’s time again for Payson’s Best Costume Party of the Year. It’s a benefit for the Gracie Lee Haught Children’s Memorial Foundation. Dress up or come as you are to the Journigan House from 7 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Oct. 19. Admission is $10 at the door. There will be a costume contest, raffles, silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Volunteers needed for 17th Annual Chili Supper
The 17th Annual Chili Supper, sponsored by PAWS, is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Elks Lodge. In addition to the delicious chili and fixings, expect a boutique, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and a U-Pick raffle.

The next Chamber Mixer is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17. Co-hosted by Time Out and Any Key Solutions, the mixer will be at the Time Out Thrift Shop, 500 S. Beeline Highway, Payson.
The theme will be “October – Domestic Violence Awareness Month” and will feature demonstrations by the Payson Fire Department and other public service entities. Food will be provided by the Payson Culinary Class, music by DJ Craig and refreshments by The Beverage Place.
