I just read an article/commentary online by James Goughnour regarding the proposed expansion of the Mexican gray wolf program to include Rim Country. In the article he encourages “Rim Country residents” to get involved and try and stop this thing. I agree wholeheartedly. However, this affects more than just Rim Country people. It affects anyone who spends time in Rim Country.
We live in Tucson and we recreate up there all summer. We respect nature, we do our part to keep the forest clean and “leave no trace” — we believe in taking care of our forests and the animals that live there.
We also hunt and fish. This project will dramatically impact the elk and deer herds up there, just as it has in Yellowstone. We don’t want to see this happen, not just because we are hunters, but because we believe that you cannot turn back the clock. There will be horrendous unintended consequences if this program is allowed to proceed. Please tell me how the presence of a top tier predator like wolves is going to improve or enhance the environment? They are killing machines ... that is all. They were here once and now they are gone, and our elk and deer have flourished in their absence.
So I think all Arizonans need to weigh in on this one and let the chips fall where they may, but to say that this is a Rim Country issue is wrong. This affects all of us.
