New AA meeting

A new open AA meeting is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Tuesday through Friday at Mogollon Health Alliance activities building, 308 E. Aero Drive. Park in gravel lot on left as you enter. Meeting is held in yellow activities building, up hill on left. For more information, call (928) 474-8779.

Payson Walkers

The Payson Walkers walk for an hour, mostly on pavement, starting from the following locations at 9 a.m. through the month of April.

• Sunday – library, Rumsey Park

• Monday – Elks Lodge on Airport Road

Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America will meet at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the American Legion Post #69, located at 709 E. Highway 260.

Card players wanted

The Saving Graces of Payson — a Canasta card-playing group — is looking for a few ladies who enjoy fun, laughter and friendship.

This Red Hat group meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the Crosswinds Restaurant patio room. There is a break for lunch around noon and play and resumes after lunch. Anyone interested in joining will be welcomed. You do not need to know how to play, the members will be happy to teach the game.

PAWS to meet

The Payson Area Woofers Society (PAWS) monthly meeting is at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 2 at the Payson Library community room, 328 N. Beeline Highway.

Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Rim Country Celts

The Rim Country Celts, Community Presbyterian Church and the vocal group Cinnamon Twist will host three events in April to celebrate Scottish heritage and culture.

Traditional Scottish songs will be performed by Cinnamon Twist, followed by an open discussion about tartans, kilts and clan associations led by John Munro of Rim Country Celts at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 2 at Dimi Espresso Cafe in the Swiss Village shopping center in Payson.

Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson, hosts a Scottish First Friday at 5 p.m., Friday, April 4. Enjoy a meal of Scottish baked potatoes with all the fixings. Cinnamon Twist and Friends will perform traditional Scottish music. Guests will have an opportunity to find their clan tartan with the assistance of CPC members. There is no admission fee, but donations are encouraged and accepted.

The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service will be held at 10:15 a.m., Sunday, April 6 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson. The Reverend Charles Proudfoot presents the service, which features piper Michael Donnelson of Flagstaff. Feel free to wear or carry your family or association tartan for blessing.

Rim Country Celts is holding a board meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 10 at the Presbyterian Church. If you wish to join the Celtic Club or give input about Celtic education, we welcome your ideas and participation.

Payson Area Stroke Survivors

The Payson Area Stroke Survivors is a support group for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

It meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the first Wednesday of the month (April 2) at the Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway, across from Walmart.

PWGA Nine-Hole Club

The Payson Women’s Golf Association Nine Hole Club will begin its 2014 season play Thursday, April 3 at Payson Golf Course. The “Payson Niners” play every Thursday morning beginning April 3 through October, with springtime tee times of 9 a.m.

Arizona Cactus Navy luncheon

An informal get-together of Navy and Coast Guard veterans in the Payson area is held on the first Thursday of each month (April 3) at La Sierra Restaurant on north Highway 87 at Forest Drive in Payson.

The group meets for coffee or lunch at 11 a.m. to share stories and camaraderie among fellow vets of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, other conflicts, and peacetime naval service. For questions, please call (928) 970-0066.

Genealogy Society

The Northern Gila County Genealogy Society will host speaker Stan Garner at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at the Society’s Library, 302 E. Bonita Drive. His program will be on “Railroads and Their Impact on the Civil War.”

Mountain Village Foundation

The Mountain Village Foundation will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, April 3 at MamaJoe’s Restaurant in Strawberry. 

Gather at 5:30 p.m. for socializing and ordering dinner. 

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. for a discussion of fund-raising projects and other items of importance.

High Country Garden Club

The monthly meeting of the High Country Garden Club is 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 3 at the fellowship hall of the First Southern Baptist Church, located at the corner of Colcord and Bonita Street, Payson.

The guest speaker will be club member Cathy Hicken, who will be discussing companion planting, which can be defined as beneficial grouping of plants to help discourage insects, attract beneficial insects, flavor enhancing or providing nutrients to the soil and plants. All those interested in gardening are invited to attend.

Pine/Strawberry Fuel Reduction

Pine/Strawberry Fuel Reduction, Inc. will hold its next meeting at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 5 in the Cultural Hall on Highway 87 in Pine.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.  

The newest board member will be introduced. There will be a question and answer time regarding this year’s brush pick-up program and a preview of the 2014 Fire on the Rim Mountain Bike Race. Also on the agenda is the status of the Trails Project since the last public meeting.

Democratic Women

The Democratic Women of Rim Country will meet at noon, Tuesday, April 8 at Tiny’s Restaurant, 600 E. Highway 260. Lanny Morrison, candidate for Arizona State House in LD-6, will be the speaker.
