A woman says she crashed her vehicle Thursday afternoon trying to avoid an elk north of Mesa del Caballo.
Paramedics initially thought they would have to airlift the woman to the Valley for medical treatment after she screamed out in pain every time they touched her.
She also appeared to fade in and out of consciousness, said Mark Essary, Houston Mesa Fire chief.
However, when Essary left to secure a landing zone for the helicopter at the Shoofly Ruins, he learned the woman had refused air transport.
Paramedics instead took her to Payson Regional Medical Center. Essary is not sure what happened to the woman next or if she was eventually flown out.
The woman was the only person involved in the single vehicle accident at milepost 3, just north of the ruins, at 4:30 p.m.
