What once housed records, hippie wear and a distinctive smell is no more with a new tenant in suite B of the Swiss Village Shops.
Just a month ago, Pam White and Sandy Short opened Scrubs and More Boutique, moving in racks of colorful medical uniforms, a full wall of shoes, medical accessories and even a few blingy bags leaving no hint of the Thrifty Hippie.
How Scrubs and More ended up in Payson is nothing short of amazing, White said.
Some 20 years ago, White and Short worked together in Mesa in home health care. The two eventually went their separate ways, moving on to different companies. For five years, they lost complete contact.
Every now and then, White would wonder what Short was up to and one day decided to Google her name.
“I knew she (Short) loved Queen Creek and may have opened a scrub shop,” White said.
So, she took a shot in the dark and put “Queen Creek scrubs” in Google and Scrubs and More Boutique popped up. One day, White decided to visit the store and Short just happened to be working.
They quickly struck up their friendship again and eventually Short asked White to come work for her.
Short opened Scrubs and More in Queen Creek some five years earlier and was looking to expand into a bigger space there.
“When she called and asked for my help to get the store up and running I told her about the need in Payson,” White said. “When I was working at Payson Care Center listening to my co-workers about having to go to the Valley for scrubs or the hassle of online ordering I knew that my goal was to open a store in Payson to give our medical community the opportunity to shop local.”
Scrubs and More carries both affordable (Cherokee and Dickies) and upscale name brands. There were two racks signed $14.99 and $15.99 in the center of the store with the latest fashions lining the walls. Upscale brands include Koi, Healing Hands, Wink, Maven and Antidote.
And the shop even carries chef wear and aprons. There is also durable medical equipment and the front of the shop is dedicated to sparkly accessories.
“We have a small portion of the store dedicated to the boutique side with purses, wallets, jewelry, girly stuff and gift items.”
Scrubs and More is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located at 804-B N. Beeline Highway, north of La Sierra Mexican Restaurant.
