See 'Rapunzel' Friday and Saturday

Missoula Children’s Theatre presents ‘Rapunzel’ in two performances at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23 in the Payson High School Auditorium. The production features 60 local children. Advance tickets are $1 off and available at Oasis Christian Books, Habitat ReStore and Miss Fitz 260 Cafe. Tickets at the door are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students in grades 1-12.

Meet youth activist Molly Barker tonight

Molly Barker, founder of Girls on the Run, a physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade, is changing her focus to political activism.

She will be in Payson for a program from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22 at Gila Community College.

She has started a initiative, the Red Boot Coalition, to gather positive-focused people and give voice to what is missing from the political arena: leadership that is heart-driven, collaborative, loving, humble, connected, compassionate and courageous.

Rim residents and visitors are invited to have a dialogue with Barker. Food and beverages will be offered as a donation only.

Unity of Payson concert

The Unity of Payson congregation is hosting Teri Wilder in concert at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22 at the Unity meeting site, the Central Arizona Board of Realtors office, 600 E. Highway 260, across from Tiny’s Restaurant.

Wilder is a singer, songwriter and gong “master.” Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for those 18 and under if tickets are purchased in advance; $12 for adults if purchased at the door. To get tickets go online to unityofpayson@gmail.com.

Check your rodeo ticket stubs

There are some unclaimed 50/50 raffle prizes from last weekend’s rodeo. Check your ticket stubs for the following winning numbers: from Friday night’s performance, #475620 and #472139; from Saturday night’s performance, #222644 and #222671.

Rummage and bake sale

Payson’s Maya Joy Dancers will hold a rummage and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 in the parking lot at 421 S. Beeline Highway, near Charlie’s Meats. A plethora of household goods will be for sale along with tasty, homemade baked goods. All donations benefit the Maya Joy Dancers.

Free brush disposal

The Regional Payson Area Project….for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

On Sunday, Aug. 24, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. No household garbage, construction debris or other items will be accepted. Use by commercial haulers is prohibited.

Home dedication

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity would like to welcome our newest homeowners. This awesome event is a result of the generous people in our community, our volunteers, board and staff.

Payson Youth Sports benefit

Gerardo’s Firewood Café will host an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25 to benefit Payson Youth Sports.

The cost is $7.99 for adults and $6 for students and includes a drink. Gerardo’s is also offering a take-out buffet option at the event.

Gerardo’s Firewood Café is at 512 N. Beeline Highway, Payson.

Free dance lessons

Free Arizona 2 Step lessons will be offered at 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley.  

The lessons are open to the public and designed for beginners as well as intermediate dancers.

Republicans host chamber manager, PCS principal

The Rim Country Republicans will host Ana Gutowski, new manager of the Rim Country Chamber of Commerce; and Patricia Fleeger, principal of the Payson Christian School, at their next meeting, Monday, Aug. 25 at Tiny’s Family Restaurant, 600 E. Choral Society auditions

If you like to sing, want to have fun with a great group of people, and you are willing to commit to weekly rehearsals, come be a part of the Payson Choral Society! We invite you to try out at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25 at the United Methodist Church, 414 N. Easy St.

Rehearsals for the Christmas Concert will begin immediately following the Aug. 25 auditions. The concert will be Dec. 13 and 14.

Free children’s clothing

Kaitie’s Closet’s next children’s clothing distribution will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Rim Country Middle School, 304 S. Meadow.

Kaitie’s Closet recently had a New Shoe Drive and we wish to thank the community for their generous donations. Parents, be sure and bring your children to receive new shoes at this distribution.

Kaitie’s Closet is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization collecting clothes for distribution free to those in need in Rim Country.  Everyone in Rim Country needing children’s clothes is welcome.

Beaver Valley Day

Beaver Valley Day takes place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug 30 in Beaver Valley. Enjoy a day of family fun including food, games for kids and adults.

There will be a pancake breakfast and Firewise education program from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Games, silent auction, duck race and BBQ hamburger dinner are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Northern Gila County Fair Books available

The Northern Gila County Fair has distributed the 2014 Fair Books to the Pine Library, Payson Library, Payson Chamber of Commerce and the Payson Parks and Recreation office in Green Valley Park.

Big raffle for Blue Ridge Fire Department

The Blue Ridge Fire Department is holding its annual Craft Fair and Raffle on Labor Day, Aug. 30 at the Blue Ridge Fire Department, 5023 Enchanted Lane, Happy Jack, Ariz.

The event features nearly 30 great prizes from airline tickets to meals and more.

Tickets are available through the Blue Ridge Fire Department, stop by or call (928) 477-2751.  

Tickets are $1 each; six for $5; 24 for $20; of 120 for $100. It is not necessary to be present at the event to win, just make sure your name and phone number are on the ticket and legible so you can be contacted.

The Blue Ridge Fire Department provides protection for eight subdivisions approximately 35 miles south of Winslow to 60 miles north of Payson.

All funds raised from the raffle go to the Blue Ridge Fire Department to assist in purchasing fire, EMS and rescue equipment.

Genealogy Society seeks yard sale donations

Having a yard sale and don’t know what to do with your leftovers? Donate them to the Northern Gila County Genealogical Society for its annual yard sale. All community donations will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be brought to the Genealogy Library at 302 E. Bonita St. in Payson any Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If those days and times don’t work for you, call Joan at (928) 474-8374 to arrange another day and time.

All donations must be in by noon on Thursday, Sept. 11 for the sale Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13. A donation receipt for tax purposes will be provided upon request.
