Writers award scholarship

Kayla Percell

Arizona Professional Writers (formerly Arizona Press Women) presented a $500 check to college scholarship recipient Kayla Percell of Payson during a recent meeting. Percell graduated from Payson High School in May and started her own business, Country Girl Creative Photography. Speaking to the group, she shared some lessons learned from writing a business plan for her business, which specializes in graduation photographs and announcements. Currently a Rio Salado College student, Percell plans to continue her studies at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Republicans host election night open house

The Gila County Republic Party will host an election night open house from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 at their Payson headquarters located at 719 S. Beeline Highway.

Alateen meeting

Alateen is a 12-step program for young people living with an alcoholic parent.

It meets at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane at 3:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Moose Lodge events

The Loyal Order of the Moose meetings are at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The Women of the Moose meet at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month.

The lodge has a Thursday Fish Fry from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and weekly dinner specials are available.

Masonic Lodge

The Sy Harrison Masonic Lodge #70, located at 200 E. Rancho Road in Payson, meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

NARFE meeting Aug. 27

The Mogollon Chapter 1235 of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees will hold their monthly no host luncheon and meeting on Aug. 27. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. at Tiny’s Restaurant on Highway 260.

This month’s guest speaker will be Suzie Tubbs, Director of Fire Wise. All active and retired federal employees are invited to attend. Any new member will receive a free lunch. Please remember the Payson Food Bank and bring non-perishable food items.

New Hope Grief Support Group

Kaitie’s Closet

Kaitie’s Closet is a nonprofit  501(c)3 organization collecting clothes for  free distribution to those in need in Rim Country.  Everyone in Rim Country needing children’s clothing is welcome.

The next Kaitie’s Closet’s distribution will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Rim Country Middle School, 304 S. Meadow.

Kaitie’s Closet recently had a New Shoe Drive and we wish to thank the community for their generous donations. Parents, be sure and bring your children to receive new shoes at this distribution.

Rim Country Coalition

The Rim Country Coalition is a group of local agencies and community members whose goal is the prevention of substance misuse/abuse among older adults in the area. The group plans to help “connect seniors in the Rim Country.”

The group meets at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at The Center (formerly Payson Senior Center) 514 W. Main St. Anyone interested in attending is welcome.

TOPS 0373 Payson (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter meets at the Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway, Payson. 

We meet every Thursday morning. Our weigh-in starts at 7 a.m.  Our meeting starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 8:50 a.m.

Payson Memoir Writers

Members of Payson Memoir Writers meet for lunch at 1 p.m. Thursday in the private dining room at the Crosswinds Restaurant. The organization is currently open to new members. 

The purpose of the meetings is for those in attendance to read from their memoirs, followed by suggestions and encouragement.

Bingo at Senior Center

The Payson Senior Center and Payson Helping Payson host bingo every Friday at the Senior Center, 514 W. Main St.

Tickets go on sale at noon and games start at 1 p.m.

A full “Blue Plate Special” lunch is also served from noon to 2 p.m.

Payson Marine Corps League to meet

All  Marines and FMF- Corpsmen in the Payson area are invited to a meeting of the Payson Marine Corps League Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Elk Lodge, 1206 N. Beeline Highway. Social gathering is at 9 a.m.; meeting agenda starts promptly at 10 a.m.
