Habitat ReStore sale

The Payson Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore will be open Friday, Feb. 7 with savings.

The Habitat ReStore is looking for donations of gently used household furnishings, appliances and building materials. Free pick up is offered for donations.

CPC welcomes Dr Jass & The Heartbeats

Dr Jass & The Heartbeats, Rim Country’s own Dixieland jazz band is having an open rehearsal from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

The band will be working through some tunes for a future performance. For a small donation, visitors may enjoy a dinner as well. The proceeds will help support the church’s child care center.

Family Movie Night

The congregation of Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson, invites Rim residents and visitors to attend a Family Movie Night at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7 at the church. The event is free and refreshments will be available.

Movies are shown at the church the first and third Fridays of each month.

AARP Smart Driver Course

AARP Smart Driver Course will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an hour break for lunch, Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Payson Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway.

To register, call (928) 472-9290 or register in person at Payson Senior Circle. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members $20 (cash or check), payable on day of class.

The course has all new material for 2014. The class is designed for those age 50 and older, but is open to everyone 18 and over. Participation may also earn a discount on your vehicle insurance.

Lip Sync Contest

The sixth annual Lip Sync Contest is Saturday, Feb. 8. It will be held at Payson High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. to allow people to bid on a vast array of silent auction items.

In addition to the students competing with their peers, some staff members from the high school and Payson Education Center will be competing with each other.

Proceeds go toward scholarships for our local teens.

Jazz concert

The Payson Friends of Jazz will host the John Darst Trio + 1 at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson.

The group includes John Darst, guitar and vocals; Bob Veltre, guitar and vocals; Chris Long, guitar and vocals; and Gerry Reynolds on drums.

Immunizations available

Starting Moday, Feb. 10, the Gila County Health Department will be providing immunizations from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday by appointment only. Walk-in vaccinations are available from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Democrats host ACC candidate

Sandra Kennedy, candidate for the Arizona Corporation Commission, will speak at Tiny’s Restaurant, 600 E. Hwy. 260 at noon, Tuesday, Feb. 11. Attention all male singers — the Payson Elks Lodge will soon be holding a Superstars Night and is looking for male singers to perform.

See Shakespeare live

The Southwest Shakespeare Company is coming to Payson to present “Julius Caesar.” The presentation is approximately 71 minutes with a 10-minute question-and-answer period afterward.

There will be two performances in the Payson High School Auditorium Tuesday, Feb. 11. The first performance is at 8:30 a.m., with students released at 9:52 a.m.; the second is at 10:10 a.m., with students released at 11:31 a.m.

The performances are open to all students, teachers and the community.

Audience members must attend the entire performance, so students will miss part of another class in order to benefit from the experience.

Author talks about Alzheimer’s disease

For author Mary Slade, life has been a journey of faith. In her book, “Silver Spurs and Sweet Memories (Looking Beyond Alzheimer’s),” she narrates the story of her life and how faith played a crucial role in each and every step.

At the age of 68, her strong and rugged husband developed Alzheimer’s. For 11 years her faith was tested as she struggled to care for her husband.

Slade will be sharing her experience with Alzheimer’s disease at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Payson Care Center. A special Valentine brunch will be served. Please make reservations with Christy VanderMolen at (928) 951-2305.

Community breakfast

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church is hosting a community breakfast from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., Friday, Feb. 14 at 507 W. Wade Lane. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee and juice.

Valentine Dinner and more

Payson United Methodist Church is having its annual Valentine’s Day Dinner and silent auction from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14. The dinner will be held at the church located at 414 N. Easy St. John and Lu Carpino will provide the entertainment.

Cost for the dinner is $20 per person and it is open to the whole community.

Proceeds will benefit Payson Helping Payson and PUMC Health Ministry.

Casino lounge brings back DJ

The Apache Spirits Lounge at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino will have DJ Brent on hand from 7 p.m. to midnight, Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.

Free Well Child Clinics

The Gila County Health Department offers a free Well Child Clinic the third Wednesday of every month. It is available for infants ages 2 months to 18 months and provides physician examinations and appropriate immunizations.

Apply for Studio Tour

The Payson Art League is now accepting applications for the Studio Tour, which will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4. Local artists show and sell their work in their own studio or in other studios. It is not necessary to be a member of PAL to participate.
