A class on writing short stories starts up at Gila Community College next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in hopes of unearthing Rim Country writers with a yarn to tell.
Payson Roundup editor Pete Aleshire will teach the class and hopes the writers will come up with stories about Rim Country, which the Roundup can publish in the paper and on the Roundup Web site.
“We have the most interesting assortment of people in Rim Country — cowboys, geologists, descendants of pioneering families, retired doctors and politicians — people with a story to tell,” said Aleshire. “I’m hoping the class will help develop a core of writers who want to share their stories.”
Aleshire taught writing at Arizona State University for 13 years before coming to the Roundup about five years ago. He also served as editor of Arizona Highways and worked for various newspapers including The Arizona Republic, Oakland Tribune, Contra Costa Times and others. He has written a dozen books on Arizona history, training F-16 pilots, geology — even bats.
