Payson’s wrestling team dominated both Cottonwood Mingus and Lakeside Blue Ridge in the final home action of the season.

The 57-24 win over Mingus and the 72-6 victory over Blue Ridge pushed the Longhorns’ dual record to 20-5 entering today’s matches at Chino Valley.

The Division III Section I tournament is set for Saturday, Feb. 8 at Winslow High. The top five wrestlers at each weight qualify for the Division III state tournament Feb. 13-14 at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

PHS won 10 of the 14 weights against the Marauders, including six by pin and three others by forfeit.

Blue Ridge sent only three wrestlers onto the mat in that lopsided dual. Brendan Macnab and Gabe Hernandez both got pins as Payson won the only two matches contested. The Longhorns won 10 other weights by forfeit, with the Yellow Jackets also getting a forfeit and neither team having a wrestler at 220.

Payson went 2-1 at Gilbert Williams Field on Jan. 15, beating Poston Butte 58-24 and San Tan Valley Combs 37-24 and losing 48-25 to Williams Field (39-3), one of the strongest teams in Division III.

Dallin Macnab (132), Chase Elmer (138) all went 3-0 for PHS. Gabe Hernandez (120), Trevor Anderson (126), Tate Sweeney (145), Nathan Cluff (152) and Steve Perry (285) all posted two wins and one loss.
