Nick McMullen set the bar high for himself with a standout baseball season as a junior.

He stood out again this spring.

The 6-foot-5 first baseman tore the cover off the baseball, hitting .437 with power in making the Division 3 All-State Baseball First Team for the second consecutive year in voting by coaches at

The class valedictorian plans to continue his baseball career and education at Division III Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., majoring in economics with hopes of continuing on to earn his master’s degree. He could wind up with a career in Major League Baseball.

“Macalester has a great history of placing their baseball players into the field of baseball, not necessarily playing but working in the front office, which is something I would love to do,” he said.

But his performance on the field indicates he might also have a shot at a professional playing career.

The four-year varsity starter led the Longhorns this season with five home runs and 32 runs batted in, while scoring 34 runs. He belted eight doubles and two triples in slugging a team-high .747. He also led PHS regulars with 12 walks, a .533 on-base percentage and a 1.280 OPS (on-base plus slugging).

McMullen usually made contact, striking out just seven times. He also led the Longhorns with 17 stolen bases in 17 attempts.

Also a slick fielder, he committed just three errors in 140 total chances at first base and pitcher for a .979 fielding percentage that also led all Payson players with at least 15 total chances.

McMullen also served as the Longhorns’ closer on the mound. The right-hander with the submarine delivery appeared in 15 games, going 2-3 with two saves, a 1.21 earned run average and 25 strikeouts, seven walks and nine hits allowed in 17 1/3 innings.

“Nick McMullen is one of our offensive leaders,” said PHS coach Brian Young. “He has played so many varsity games over the past four years that he has a great knowledge of how pitchers are going to work him. Often other teams are planning on ways to pitch around him and he still comes up with key production.

“He also plays an outstanding first base. He has the quickest tag on pickoff moves and gives our infield a lot of confidence to throw to him.”

McMullen and teammate Dailey Carnes played in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association Division 3 Senior All-Star Game at Surprise Stadium on May 31. They helped the North All-Stars win 11-6.

He also appeared with classmate Miguel Mendoza in the AzBCA Academic All-Star Game on June 7 in Surprise. McMullen played first base and also pitched, retiring the side in order in the third then coming back in with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth to get his team out of a jam by retiring all three batters he faced without allowing a run to score. He struck out the first two batters he faced and induced a weak grounder back to the mound that he fielded and threw to first for the out. Mendoza pitched a clean fourth inning.

McMullen also made the Arizona Republic’s Division 3 All-State Second Team.
