Inattention To Children Is The Real Problem

Our editor discreetly avoided the real issue of the children picking up the gun and one of them losing his life.

The real problem in our society isn’t the unsecured weapon; it’s the inattention of the supposed caring, loving, parent — whether in a drowning or a gunshot.

Children having children, unheard of 50 years ago; or if it occurred, it was a shameful thing and kept secret. Girls were warned of the consequences of spreading their legs to anyone who said I love you or other words of endearment, or offered candy in whatever form.

And excuses, have no merit — “I had to go to the bathroom” or “I just was on the phone for a few seconds” or “someone rang the doorbell.” We’ve heard it all, but the simple truth is this — you cannot take your eyes off your children. When will they ever learn?

Blaming an inanimate object for a tragedy instead of placing the blame on the inattentive, supposedly responsible person is the crux of the real problem today.

The age of the mother or parent has nothing to do with it. Parents in their 30s and 40s have children drown and shoot each other. They aren't watching and protecting their kids.

There are times when you can't watch your children every second, like going to the bathroom, but Pat is right, as is Elaine, the problem is many parents today just plain don't watch their children - but they do watch the TV, the cell phone, ect...
