A Payson family escaped a house fire on Friday afternoon that sent up a pillar of smoke visible all over town.
Flames shooting out of the basement window of the house on Colcord set an oak tree and the carport on fire and filled the whole house with smoke after 1 p.m. on Friday.
The quick arrival of firefighters from Payson, Hellsgate, Houston Mesa and the U.S. Forest Service fire departments kept the flames from spreading to the rest of the house or to neighboring houses.
Fire commanders said all the residents of the house escaped. The residents said their dog didn't make it out of the house. However, firefighters worked their way through the smoky house and found the dog. Police say firefighters revived the dog, using supplemental oxygen.
