It was so windy this week ... that the pop-ups at the Bashas’ annual Food Fair were just about blown away. The wind felt like a hurricane! Many of the vendors at the site were holding down their pop-ups while their merchandise was trying to fly away. The Hellsgate Fire Department Fireflies Auxiliary was trying to sell T-shirts, caps and cookbooks that were also ready to take flight. The auxiliary finally gave up early, but the time everything was set up, the attempt to sell to the public was successful. The money raised will be going to offset some of the cost of the new kitchen in the new fire station in Tonto Village. The auxiliary wishes to thank the public for their support.
The Fireflies will be setting up again at the Concert in the Park in July for the John Carpino and the Hot Cappuccinos event as well as the Junction 87 concert. The auxiliary will also be selling commemorative T-shirts for fallen firefighter Bobby Mollere as well as selling raffle tickets for a Smith & Wesson MP 22 caliber rifle. The monies collected will be given to Bobby Mollere’s family from the raffle and the T-shirt sales. The T-shirts are $20 and the raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The drawing will be on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. You need not be present to win, but must be 21 years or older on the day of the drawing.
The auxiliary and some of the firefighters will have tickets to sell and more information will be available at station #21 in Star Valley or from auxiliary president Karen Carlen at (480) 861-3979 or Dara Sutton at (928) 478-0052.
Hellsgate Fire Department
On Saturday, June 13, the fire department held its annual Spring Fling at Rumsey Park in Payson. The firefighters and their wives were treated to a hot dog, brat and hamburger cookout with former fire chief Gary Hatch manning the grill. The wives brought a great selection of side dishes and desserts for everyone to enjoy.
The main focus of the event was the Yellow Brick Road Awards given out to the firefighters with the most brains, heart and courage.
The most brains honor was awarded posthumously to Larry Corey, past fire board chairman. The most heart award was shared by firefighter Bobbie Doss and fallen firefighter Bobby Mollere. The firefighter deemed to have the most courage was Gary Hatch, who has been the chief for more than 32 years.
Acting fire chief David Bathke also recognized the Hellsgate fire board for its dedication and hard work to the fire department.
The Fireflies Auxiliary was also recognized for its hard work in raising money for the fire department. There were three former presidents and the present president of the auxiliary recognized: Nancy Barela of the former Diamond Star Auxiliary, Dara Sutton and Janet Snyder of Fireflies Auxiliary, and the present president Karen Carlen.
The Divas are going great guns every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Tonto Village fire station. There were so many ladies who showed up to play that there needed to be two different tables set up to play chicken foot. The only requirement is that you bring a dish to share with about a dozen or more ladies for the fantastic buffet luncheon everyone enjoys before play.
